Most of the calls we take in Bozeman are repairs, not replacements. A wind event comes through the valley, a shingle goes missing, or a brown ring appears on the ceiling near a bathroom fan. We come out, work out what's happening, and explain what we found and why it failed.
Roof leak diagnosis and repair
The most important thing to understand about a roof leak is that the wet spot inside is rarely below the hole outside. Water enters at a failed detail, runs down the underside of the sheathing or along a rafter, and drops wherever it finds a seam, a light fixture or a nail. Chasing the stain instead of the source is why leaks come back after a repair.
So the first job is diagnosis. We look at the roof above and around the interior evidence, check the details that commonly fail — flashing at walls and chimneys, valleys, pipe boots, skylight curbs, nail pops — and where it helps, look at the attic side to see which framing member the water has been tracking down. Then we repair the source, not just the symptom.
Signs it's worth getting looked at:
- Stains, rings or bubbling paint on a ceiling or upper wall
- Damp insulation, or daylight and dark staining on the attic side of the decking
- Shingle granules collecting in gutters or at downspout outlets
- Shingles missing, lifted or curled after wind
- Water showing up only during driving rain, or only during a winter thaw
Shingle, flashing and roof penetration repairs
Asphalt roofs in this valley rarely fail across the whole field first. They fail at the details and at the edges. The repairs we do most often:
- Missing, cracked and wind-lifted shingles
- Step and counter flashing along walls, chimneys and dormers
- Cracked or split pipe boots around plumbing vents
- Valley and eave repairs after ice damming has backed water up under the shingles

Bozeman roofs work hard. UV exposure at this elevation is harder on asphalt than at lower altitudes, wind comes down off the Bridgers, and the freeze-thaw cycle runs from late autumn well into spring. The fasteners in the starter course and the flashing details are usually what give up first.
Repair or replacement: what your roof needs
Repair is normally the right answer when the roof still has service life left, the damage is confined to one or two areas, and the decking underneath is sound. Replacement starts making more sense when shingles are brittle or losing granules across whole planes, when you've had leaks in several different places over a couple of winters, or when the decking is soft in more than one spot.
There are limits to what a repair can do. Matching shingles on an older roof is never exact, weathered shingles are harder to lift without breaking, and a repair addresses the failure we found rather than the general condition of everything around it. What happens during a repair assessment
Call or send the form and tell us what you're seeing. We arrange a time to look at the roof, get up on it where it's safe to do so, and identify the source of the problem. You get an explanation of what failed and a written estimate for the repair, itemising materials and labour, before any work starts.
If the problem is urgent — water actively coming in, a section of roof open to the weather, storm damage — go to emergency roof repair instead. If you mainly want to know the condition of the roof before something goes wrong, a roof inspection is the better starting point.
Roof repair questions
Can a small leak wait?+
Usually it shouldn't. Water that shows up on a ceiling has often travelled along rafters or decking from somewhere else on the roof, so by the time you see a stain the wet area is larger than the mark. The longer it sits, the more insulation and sheathing there is to deal with.
Do you repair work done by another roofer?+
Yes. We assess what's there, repair it if it's repairable, and tell you plainly when it isn't.
How soon can someone look at it?+

Is repair cheaper than replacement?+
Usually, when the roof still has service life left. If the underlayment has failed or the decking is soft in several places, repeated patching costs more over a few years than replacing the roof. We'll explain what we found and let you decide.
Will a repair make the roof last a specific number of years?+
No one can honestly promise that. A repair fixes the failure we found; how long the rest of the roof lasts depends on its age, ventilation and condition. We'll give you our read on that when we assess it.
